Hoodoo blanket

I first learned about vodun/voodoo religion in an undergraduate course and fell in love with the art and rituals. Now with a PhD in religious studies, it’s still a favorite so here is my tribute.

The veve (veh-vay) patterns are Haitian vodun, and represent the goddess of love (Erzuli), the serpent of wisdom (Danballa), and the guardian of the graveyards (Baron Samedi). The flags or drapeaux and the other design elements are also typical of the veve, which are usually drawn on the ground in chalk or rice flour.

Acrylic 4/worsted weight yarn, 46”x57” with border. Pastel yarns with sparkle in them (hard to tell in the photo).
